Director's Introduction

In many ways it’s appropriate to call The Receipt a conventional Romantic Comedy. However, in many respects that label isn’t appropriate at all. The Receipt is a light-hearted story of two people coming together, a bildungsroman of two girls finding themselves in each other, and a parting-of-the-ways. And it can be many things to many different people. Though we have before us a story of two girls about to graduate from college, we also have before us characters that I think all of us can relate to. For my part, I certainly find a lot of myself in Evie’s story. The Receipt in so many ways is the perfect “student film,” not just because the film lends itself to being produced on a college campus with a limited budget, but also because it tells the story of college students, who face many of the same uncertainties and struggles that all college students, ourselves included, will face in the journey to adulthood and self-understanding. As Evie so aptly says, “I realize now, looking back on those four years, that it’s really up to us to become comfortable with ourselves, whoever we are.”
