The film was written during the spring and summer of 2007 by UVa senior Rachel Bernstein and went into production under the guidance of producer/director Kevin G. Bender in September 2007. Leading the crew were director of photography Kevin Collins and co-producer and sound designer Mike Benoins. After a lengthy audition process in which over thirty students auditioned, Sarah Elizabeth Edwards, Mauri Epstein, and Matthew Marcus were selected to play the three principal characters: Evie, Norah, and Thomas. The Receipt remained in production from September 2007 to February 2008 and made its world premiere in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 9, 2008.
