29 January 2009

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA. The official World Premiere of RiverBend Films' fifth feature film, The Artist will take place on Friday May 1st, 2009, at Culbreth Theatre on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, at 8:00pm. The film will be shown in spectacular 1080p High Definition with accompanying Dolby Digital 5.1 surround-sound mix. The Artist is RiverBend Films' follow-up project to the 2008 critically-acclaimed film The Receipt and features many of the same cast/crew. The Artist stars Matthew Marcus, a University of Virginia theatre student, as the films' hero Alex. Starring opposite Matthew are fellow University of Virginia theatre students Casey Stein (Rebecca) and Russ Hicks (Matthew), and Charlottesville community actors Glenn Aubrey (Jared) and Andrew Todhunter (Dr. Anthony Andrews), along with eighth-grade Charlottesville student Arrietta van der Voort (Alice), who makes her film acting debut. The film co-stars Katie Willis (Claire), Sam Taggart (Thomas), Christopher Moneymaker (Max), and Jacquie Walters (Linda).

The original screenplay of The Artist was written by Matthew Marcus (also the films' leading actor) in 2008. The Artist tells the story of Alex, a college student and avid comic book fan who is entering his final semester of college. As a result of unresolved events in his past, Alex begins to invent a comic-book inspired fantasy wherein one of his professors, Dr. Anthony Andrews, a psychologist, is the architect of the Apocalypse, and Alex, his roommate Matthew, his girlfriend Rebecca, and a homeless man named Jared all play an integral role in thwarting his ambitions to ruin the world. As delusions unravel and realtty sets-in, The Artist becomes a tale of secrets revealed, dreams deferred and renewed, the encapsulating psychological hold that power wields against the powerless, and the discovery of two young adults that deep within each of them there lies a hero waiting to be unleashed upon the world.

Principal photography on The Artist, which began on September 27th 2008, is still underway and is set to be completed February 14th 2009. The Artist was filmed on-location in Charlottesville and Hampton Roads, Virginia, in full-1080p high definition digital using Sony motion picture cameras. All post-production work, including video and sound editing, rendering, and digital compositing, was done using Adobe Creative Suite CS3 designed for Microsoft Windows Vista, which is the same software package utilized in the post-production of such films as Superman Returns and The Matrix trilogy. The finished film will also feature a complete 6-channel Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound mix-down and a two-minute-long sequence of 3D-animated visual effects designed and rendered using Blender, which was used to create elements of the visual effects in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The film is produced by University of Virginia sophomore and first-time producer Ashley Kinney, co-produced by writer/actor Matthew Marcus and University of Virginia alumna Gabrielle Moskey, and photographed by University of Virginia students Ranjan Khan and Kai Chang. University of Virginia senior Jason Kobielus is the film's production designer and associate producer, University of Virginia junior Jalysa Conway serves as costume designer, and Canadian student Erik Kilanksi is the leading art director. Post-production was handled by Kevin G. Bender (picture editor, supervising sound editor, visual effects compositor), Jamie Coupar (sound designer), Zachary Pruckowski (sound mixer), and Kyle Ringgenberg (Visual Effects 3D Animator). Kyle Ringgenberg is also responsible for the film's completely-original musical score, orchestrated and sequenced using the Vienna Symphonic Library digital toolset, which has been frequently utilized in many major film productions, including Underworld and The Dark Knight. The Artist will be the fifth feature-length film to be directed by Williamsburg-area filmmaker and RiverBend Films co-founder Kevin G. Bender (IMDb Page).

RiverBend Films Fifth AnniversaryOver the past five years, RiverBend Films, also known briefly as Bender990 Productions and AmrasSaralonde Films, has marked several major milestones, including the completion of its first feature documentary, Seven Days Under the Sun, completed in July 2004, and its first narrative feature film, Lifes a Smoose, which premiered at the University of Virginia in April 2005.
